Some Latest Activities of Chinese Navy

August.29 (China Defense Mashup Reporting by Johnathan Weng) — Since the grand naval parade in April 2009, Chinese Navy has been out of the focus of public. But recently some latest images from Chinese Internet showed some interesting activities of Chinese marine forces.

From the end of August, Chinese people began to reform the “Island” commanding structure of “varyag” Aircraft Carrier located in Dalian. The images from Chinese cyberspace clearly displays that the original supporting structure of “Top Plate” three-dimension searching radar has been removed and other affiliated parts of the commanding island is being prepared to be craned by gantry crane. Some Chinese military enthusiasts believe that the size of “Island” is going to be shrunken for providing more space for ship-borne aircrafts or ammunition.

The undergoing of “varyag” reconstruction has been lasted fro years and the “Island” structure, the most obvious part of “varyag”, however has never been unchanged comparing with the vessel rebuilding or even the legendary unseen new power system installation. Now this time Chinese people’s behavior on reforming Island structure surely approved that the overhauling of “varyag” is in final stage and this Russian carrier is going to enter service in short time.

Besides, it is interested that one Chinese company website has a webpage to display a Chinese people named Zhang Xueqing (张学清) who was once involved in the project of “858 Facility” to develop aircraft catapult system for carrier.

The emerge of Type 054A FFG frigates bring embarrassing situation to PLA Navy Type 052 and 051B guided missile destroyer. One picture from China Internet showed that the Type 518 (REL-2) Haiying long-range surveillance and early warning Radar on DDG-112 “Ha’erbin” destroyer’s helicopter hanger has been removed. Is the radar removed for technological malfunction or upgrading the electronic sensor of this warship. Of course, other sensors of Type 052 destroyer are still required for improvement and integration. What will Type 052 destroyer look like? China Defense Mashup will provide continuous report as soon as possible.
