CASIC is the backbone of national science and technology industry, is a large state-owned hi-tech enterprise under direct administration of central government. It has grown out of the Fifth Academy of the Ministry of Defense in 1956, and gone through a long history with different names of the Ministry of the Seventh Machinery Industry, the Ministry of Aerospace Industry, the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Industry, China Aerospace Corporation, China Aerospace Machinery and Electronics Corporation, and the present one. CASIC owns seven academies, two scientific research and development bases, six public listed companies, and over 620 other companies and institutes scattering nationwide.
CASIC is the biggest missile weapon system developing and manufaturing industry. It possesses a complete system for developing, researching and manufacturing air denfence missile system, cruising missile system, solid propellent rocket, space technological products and other technologies. Its products cover various fields of land, sea, air, and electromagnetism. It has successively provided dozens of advanced missile equipments for the nation. It also has made outstanding contributions to manned space flight, lunar exploration and other key national projects.
CASIC sets up the concept of “broad defense and safety” and devotes itself to the development road of integrating military and civilian sectors which features Chinese characteristics. It develops a series of products that combine military and civilian technologies in information industry and equipment manufacturing. The anti-counterfeiting tax controlled system, safety ensuring system, and emergency and rescue equipment developed by CASIC plays an important role in maintaining national economy moving ahead, carrying out safety ensuring project of significant activities and resisting large earthquake and other emergency disasters.
