2011-06-09 (China Military News cited from AP) -- China warned Asian neighbors Thursday to stop searching for oil near the disputed Spratly Islands and vowed to assert its sovereignty over the potentially petroleum-rich territory in the South China Sea despite rival claims.
China and the Philippines have swapped diplomatic protests over the islands, with Filipino officials accusing Chinese forces of intruding into Manila-claimed areas six times since February and of firing shots in at least one incident. Beijing denied the allegation Thursday and said it would use violence only when attacked.
The Spratlys, which are believed to be atop vast oil and gas reserves, have long been feared as a potential flash point of armed conflict in Asia.
The chain of barren, largely uninhabited islands, reefs and banks, are claimed wholly by China, Taiwan and Vietnam and partly by the Philippines, Malaysia and Brunei.
Addressing Manila's complaints for the first time, Chinese Ambassador Liu Jianchao denied that his government committed any intrusion.
He said that China has not started to drill for oil in the contested region and warned other claimants to stop any oil exploration in the Chinese-claimed area without Beijing's permission. China claims the entire South China Sea.
"We're calling on other parties to stop searching for the possibility of exploiting resources in these areas where China has its claims," he told reporters.
China, however, is open to engaging other claimant countries in jointly exploring for oil and gas in the region, he said.
Asked what would happen if countries defy China, Liu said that Beijing would assert its right over the disputed region diplomatically and not resort to force unless it comes under attack. "We will never use force unless we are attacked," he said.
In the most serious incident reported by the Philippines, Chinese navy vessel allegedly fired Feb. 25 to scare away Filipino fishermen from Jackson Atoll, which is claimed by Manila and relatively close to Philippine shore.
The Philippine government also accused two Chinese patrol boats of harassing a Filipino oil exploration ship on March 2 into leaving a vast area called the Reed Bank. A Filipino general scrambled two military aircraft, which arrived after the Chinese vessels had left, the Philippine military said.
Liu said no Chinese vessel fired on Filipino fishermen but suggested that Chinese forces took action to keep the Filipino exploration ship from the Reed Bank.

China will have to work much harder in dealing with this strictly Asian issue(developing out from the mis-guidances or ill-intentions of US and a few Western powers by the under-handed tactics and tricks some Asian nations still have NO COURAGE to confront and overcome). Noticing each and every incidents in the South China sea have something to do with Western organizations or Governments which clear showed that these Asian nations are acting under the directions or coercions(the fears of the past still linger in their minds). There will always be ways to properly dealing with this unnecesary disruptions(resulted from the usual culrits or criminals)to the peaceful and productive co-operations among all Asian nations in the South China sea.

As for the spratleys. Those island chains passed through multiple hands since the Sino French war and WW2. But if China wants to claim them. Thats China's business. If we look at a map and consider the territorial laws then the Philippines, Vietnam and Malasyia has more credibility to claim the spratly islands than the Chinese. No offense.

Yes, but if you do happen to attack the Philippines or other claimant countries, as the American Ambassador clearly said during the Philippine Independence Day celebrations that the US will help the Philippines and will be there if ever the tension escalates. I don't think it would be very wise that the Chinese would wage war especially now that your economy is very reliant on exports. If ever there was war and if it was started by China I think sanctions and group/regional actions would be taken.
But seriously, I don't want war. Too many children, women and men could die. But have you looked at a map recently? Have you seen the distance between the Spratly Islands and China? Parts of the Spratly Islands are well within the 220km Exclusive Economic Zone set by the UN.

Of course all these claims about sovereignty by China over the South China sea and other areas in East- and South-Asia are pure nonsense. An example that could open your eyes to this nonsense: Will Italy claim an area from the borders of Scotland to the sands of the Sahara and from the Atlantic sea-board to the Euphrates as Italian because until the year 400 or so this was all Roman territory? Definitly not. These claims are dangerous. It reminds us Europeans of the thirties of the last century when Hitler made his claims for large chunks of territory in Europe because large populations of Germans were living there from olden times on. So, when this kind of language is spoken one has to be prepared! This is a lesson learned the hard way from European history.

In the island of Pag-Asa in the Spratly, there lives 60 families. It is a town by itself. They are civilians. They live with the Marines who man the other 7 islands and the maintain the landing strip. that community is part of the Province of Palawan. China does not have civilians there. Just merely soldiers manning their machine guns and radars. Same as Taiwan in Itu Aba island, its a military garrison.

You are not going to build a rig within the 200 mile EEZ of the Philippines. You will be stopped. It's an invasion by siphoning economic resources of the Philippines. Your EEZ is based on your continental shelf. Not on the islands that are not even inhabited and disputed such as Spratly's. You signed the UNCLOS agreement. Japan, Australia, Canada and the US have said it already. Even Singapore is questioning.

Rofl, let me clear this up, Philippine navy's flag ship is called Datu Kalantiaw, a retired WWII era U.S destroyer escort demoted to a frigate. Basically an old man ready to kick the bucket.
The "newer" ship is called Gregorio del Pilar Class a retired U.S coast guard patrol ship made in 1965. ROFL.
Now, below these 2 old hags aboves are some even more ridiculous corvettes. Rizal Class - a WWII era U.S minesweeper. Miguel Malvar - WWII era U.S patrol boats.
The newest boats in this relic navy are some former royal navy boats called Jacinto.
The Philippines are bent on buying some 2nd hand submarines, which they can't even use in the shallow waters of South China Sea.

Those were more than 15 years ago. Those incidents will never happen again. Vietnam just got two Russian Frigates to counter whatever the PLAN has. Pretty soon the Philippines will have 3 missile armed frigates (WHEC Cutters) before the end of the year also. vietnam just ordered 6 subs and the Philippines is about to order 2 subs themselves and 8 F-18's. they got away stealing the Paracels and a few PHI islands in the Spratlys but that's not going to happen again. President Aquino is with China's leadership in Beijing sweet talking the Politburo but he is not giving China an inch as far as Spratly's. Actually the Fujian-Filipinos are the one's siphoning China's resources by investing over 3 billion $ the last years buying and setting up malls and fast food places all over China all the way to Xinjiang. Those monies are going back to the Philippines. Aquino's mom is a Fujian Chinese decent.

The Gepard is barely 2000 tons and it has no credible air defense. Its only true bite is the subsonic Kh-35, which has a strike range of a 130 km. Chinese frigates are over 4000 tons. The 054 also suffers from poor air defense but is equipped with the near supersonic YJ83 that has a strike range of over 350 km. It is also equipped with land attack cruise missiles with a range of 1800 km.

Well, vietnam is getting the Brahmos cruise missiles from India and that should scare the Varyag from leaving the Hainan base.
When the Philippines acquire the s-3 vikings from the US. That should provide and additional punch and check PLAN's sea assets.

The Brahmos is a Russian missile. The engine that powers the missile is Russian while only the electronic systems are indian. It was a joint effort between Russia and india, but mainly sold to india. So Vietnam will still have to go through Russian approval.
Its quite an impressive missile. Its maximum speed is mach 3 and has an attack range of 290 km. But this still falls short of the Chinese C-805, which has a maximum range of 500 km. Thats almost twice the range of the brahmos.
The s-3 viking isnt even a combat aircraft. Its a support type vehicle. I dont even know why its even that relevant.

Yes Tienfei, not a fighter but S-3 Vikings are mainly used for ASW but can carry depth charges, torpedoes, Harpoons, Mavericks and the SLAM-ER's. It can even carry nuclear bombs (B57 nuclear bombs). Perfect for the West Philippine Sea scenario. It will be able to patrol the Spartlys and back for long periods of time. Yeah retired, but last couple of squadron has plenty of life left.
As far as the Brahmos, we all know the relationship of Russia and Vietnam. Excellent! I'm sure the fact that they just got a couple of state of the art frigates what more advance attack missiles. It's a given.

Even for its support role its outdated. The S-3 Viking has been retired from american service, so any sales to the philippines is simply just an excuse to sell archaic leftovers that the us navy no longer operates, much like the philippine navy and air force. The s-3 viking is going to be used as support for the philippine navy to track Chinese submarines. Even assuming the s3 viking has any chance of tracking Chinese subs, just what kind of navy does the philippine operate?
The philippine only has 2 major surface combatants. The BRP Gregorio del Pilar and BRP Rajah Humabon PF-11. And they are all frigates. It has no submarines, and its navy operates no major air combatants. The only aircraft that the philippine has in any significant numbers is the p-51. But that is a WW2 era plane. Seeing those aircrafts remind me of the movie tora tora tora.
Gepard was never state of the art. The best missile the ship operates is the Kh-35. Its a subsonic missile with a range of 130 km.

Philippines does not need a lot of major surface vessels. The US Navy provides it. Yes the Americans dont have its two largest bases here but we have a visiting forces agreement and a mutual defense treaty with them. We have even thousands of US special forces stationed in Mindanao fighting the Muslim insurgencies. We will never meet you head on. And we know you will never invade the Philippines and occupy it. For you to do it you will need the size of Japan's pre-WW2 navy like

141 destroyers
171 submarines
hundreds of support ships, thousands of front line jet fighters, a million man army just to invade and not even sure of winning.

Second - Taiwan does not have 3 million of its citizen in the US. Nor does it have 200,000 Americans in Taiwan. Well, the Philippines does. the US can afford to ignore it. Our cultures are so intertwined that even Hillary Clinton is so accustomed in eating pansit(Filpino noodles).

Doesnt matter. Even if we assume the rigs never arrive, any confrontation would have been in China's favor. And the us would have been forced to watch. The reality is. China could wipe every philippino on earth and the us wouldnt partake in it because they would certainly be targeted next.

The Yamato was quite an impressive ship. At the time it was probably the biggest surface combatant of its era weighing in at over 70,000. It was equipped with almost 200 guns. In contrast a modern 052c Destroyer is only equipped with 3 guns weighing in at only 7000 tons. That makes it 10 times smaller than the Yamato. But all that being said there is no way 1 yamato or even 20 yamatos could ever hope to compete with a modern 052c.
The biggest gun the Yamato carried was the 155 mm. Its maximum range was probably no more 40 km. In contrast, a 7000 ton 052c today would be carrying missiles with ranges anywhere between 300 to 2000 km.

If Yamato or Musashi was available today like the resurrected Missouri and Wisconsin battleships of the Operation Desert Storm, it will be armed with like 4 Phalanx CIWS, 16 harpoons and 24 Tomahawks with a 2,500 km range. It was devastating as a fire support platform though. The 16 inch gun shell was heavier than a Chery automobile.

The whole thing would have to be refitted with modern weaponry and sensors. But this is just fantasy because the ship wasnt refitted. The battleship design has been completely replaced with much smaller vessels such as destroyers and frigates. Allowing these vessels to have smaller RCS and thus more difficulty to track. Although I would love to see a 70,000 ton plus warship in the Chinese navy armed with nothing but DFs and CJ10s, the Yamato was not that ship and thus wouldnt have mattered if it existed today. The thing was a 70,000 ton floating artillery piece. When it gets sunk, it wont even see it coming.
