China's Emergency Military Procurement

Jun.09 (China Military Report released by "China Military Power Mashup" and written by Tong Shenghai) -- On Jan. 12, a magnitude-7 earthquake struck the Caribbean nation of Haiti. The procurement branch of the Chinese military's General Logistics Department immediately mobilized for disaster relief and ordered supply stations to procure supplies.

At 2 p.m. on Jan. 15, the Military Material and Equipment Institute and the Beijing Procurement and Supply Station under the General Logistics Department received orders to finish purchasing urgently needed materials, such as drinking water, instant food, generators and emergency lighting equipment, before 8 p.m. on Jan. 16.

Materials to aid Haiti

The station started emergency procurement, contacted suppliers, measured cargo quantity, size and weight according to procurement value and

types of cargo aircraft and sorted supplies by types. The station completed the procurement plan in only three hours, finished purchasing in 25 hours and sent cargo aircraft full of relief supplies to Haiti ahead of schedule.

This was only the first round of emergency relief procurement. The second started on Jan. 18.

While Chinese soldiers were busy aiding Haiti, some of the worst snow in 30 years hit China's northern neighbor, Mongolia. The snow covered 90 percent of Mongolia's territory and killed more than 1 million head of livestock.
