Many thought that the Type 98/99 was only a beefed up T-72, which is totally wrong. The chasis, the main gun was only inspired by the T-72, the rest is own development.

This tank has the same amount of armour as an Challenger 2, M1A2 or Leopard 2A6, which is around the 1200mm RHA equivalent mark on the turret. it can withstand over 4 rounds from a t72 main gun. Very similar in performance to the top western MBT's armour and also fires du rounds in return. This is no chinese paper tank.

[..YouTube..] The tank isn't a copy of the T72. This tank is far more capable than a T90 nevermind a T72. The Chinese have developed their own armour and and yes the tank does have hunter killer optics and engagement systems. It has a sloped frontal turret design similar to a Leopard 2. The commander has his own 360 panoramic degree optics with thermal and night vision technology for searching out targets.

The gun is a chinese made 125mm smoothbore gun developed from a previous Chinese 125mm gun built under licence from Russia. Just like an M1 has a
120mm gun copy made under licence from the German Leopard. The Russian T90's gun isnt even on the same level as this weapon.

The tungsten based sabot round can penetrate over 800mm of RHA armour which puts it in the same performance range as any tungsten base kinetic round from a Leopard 2, M1 or Challenger 2's gun. The DU sabot can penetrate over 950mm of RHA. Same as the M1 or Challenger 2's DU rounds. That means it can penetrate if not destroy an M1-A1, Leopard 2-A5 or Challenger 1 in a single shot. (These tanks all have about the 900mm RHA level)

It has a 1500hp engine similar to modern nato mbts but has a top road speed of over 80km and faster off road combat speed than any of other. Its fuel range isn't all that bad either. Stop discounting the tank simply because it is Chinese. Suffice to say that the Type 99G is far more capable than any Russian tank ever built and right behind a Leopard 2-A6 in armour performance. It is an excellent tank.

[..YouTube..] Well this post was about the Type 99G, but I don't see how the J10 fighter could be a copy of the cancelled Israeli project. The J10 is a newer jet en-cooperating lessons and newer technology learned from the J9 prototype. The J9 project began in the 1960s, long before the Israeli LAV project. Planes with forward canards are nothing new. The LAV looks like an F16 with forward canards. Definitely nothing new there. Further more, Eurofighter & Rafale too all look very similar. So who copied who?

I already explained that the tank's gun, ammo, armour and speed are easily on par with the western tanks, and by the way it outperforms the Leopards because the Germans won't use DU kinetic rounds. If you compare the ammo to the Russian T90 ammo you will see that the Russian DU rounds could not give eqiv. performance to UK or US DU kinetic rounds.

We have seen the results in the gulfwars.
We need no DU our L55 120mm is known to be the best.Our 70 tonne tanks woult take a bit more than the light Type-99.
Most of Chineese MBTs are Type-59 whitch where FOOD like the T-72 for the Abrams.
And i see no reason why the type-99 woult preform better.
J-10/11 are F-16 and SU-27 copys.

[..YouTube..] Leopard 2 and M1 are based on the original Leopard, which in many respects is inferior to T72. Type 99 is to T72 as Leopard 2 is to Leopard. Basic requirements for the type99 when the development started were a leopard 2 like tank. And they choose T72 as a starting point. T72 does have a sound chassis design. Also 60+ tonnes plus tanks are too heavy for most parts of China.
J10 has absolutely nothing to do with F16. And J11 are improved licensed production (a deal with Russia) of Su27.

[..YouTube..] Look, this is not about politics or patriotism. It's about a tank, and numbers and the laws of physics say that the tank is on par in most of the key and meaningful areas. The Leo 2-A6 by the way is an excellent tank and worthy of use as a benchmark, however you are wrong about it being standard. The only standard heavy tank in service is the Challenger 2. It is in full service with the UK Army. The M1-A2 and Leo 2-A6 tanks being phased in slowly to replace or supplement their older sisters

The Type 99G en-cooperates Chinese composite armour similar to the British chobham, this allows it to have the same characteristics as RHS (Rolled Homogeneous Steel) equiv. to 1100 to 1200mm LOS, with the advantage of being much lighter than actual steel. If a tank actually had this much steel armour it would weigh well over 100 metrics tons. The fact that the Type 99G tank weighs considerably less is a plus for chinese armour development.

A Sabot round that can penetrate 950mm or more of RHA will destroy a tank with 900mm of RHA. period. In the case of the Leo, it doesn't have the penetration capability of a DU round. The Leo's tungsten round can do 850mm at best. It cannot penetrate a 1200mm RHA tank. period. This has already been demonstrated in the real world by friendly fire with the M1s and challys.

[..YouTube..] Actually they WILL take a massive punch. The fact is that the most heavily armoured tanks cannot destroy one another as they don't have the fire-power to do so. There is nothing on the modern battlefield that can destroy a modern heavy tank. The best DU rounds + the longest guns, i.e. the Challenger 2 (55 cal L30A1) cannot penetrate another Chally 2. In Iraq it took over 60 RPG's, with just paint scratches and optics damage. The Chinese with their Type 99G join this small heavy club

[..YouTube..] ERA is good armour, there is nothing wrong with it. ERA protects against HEAT rounds. Composite protects against sabot rounds. The Chinese use composite armour with ERA bricks on top of it. Just like the Chally 2 and the M1-A2. Chobham is used exclusively by the UK Challenger and US Abrams series tanks. However other countries (Germany, France in Euro) have developed their own composite armour. The Chinese being the best of the "others". The Russians have yet to develop a similar type of armour.

The Chinese armour used on the Type 99G by the way is being used to upgrade the Type 96 to the Type 96G standard. So yes, they will have a lot of tanks with heavy armour protection. And cheap as well. The tanks also fire the Russian AT-11 Sniper laser guided missile system which can penetrate 950mm RHA from 5000m. Nor the US or the UK take the Chinese as a joke. Better to have them as allies than enemies.

[..YouTube..] Dutch is just ill-informed. He seems to think a ZTZ99A2 is a T72, and quotes specs from that tank. A Type 99G's base model is 54 metric tonnes, only 8 tonnes less than a Challenger 2 (62). Every country however will adapt their tank to the situation at hand though, so in battle it might well end up weighing close to main western MBTs and that could only mean more armour. The tank is extremely flexible. With its anti-missile system, it may well be the best tank on the battlefield tactically.

Because the tank is being upgraded almost continuously, there are a lot of misconceptions about the tank. it is no different in progress from the US M1, A1 and A2, or the Leopard 2 A1, to A6 variants. The latest information available pertains to the ZTZ99-A2.

[..YouTube..] Not exactly. The 'G' only means upgraded variant to the previous one. It is not an official designation. At the moment there are only Type99 and Type99A in service. You can tell when you look at the different armor panel add-ons, and the turret on the top is slightly different.
The Type99A2 has more ERA armor on the whole turret and the chassis got redesigned being more compact/shorter due to the new 1500HP engine that is less big than the curent one.

I would argue it has more armor on front then a Russian tank. Due to 2 man turret it could equal western thickness because they have a three man turret, thus has greater internal volume.

[..YouTube..] Its developed from the Russian Chasis, as well as many past Russian modified vehicles.
Shape has little to do with this.
This has more armor than any Russian tank, but it has less armor than any western tank.

[..YouTube..] Chassis was based off T 72 but is not a replica of origional T 72. The armor was increased and parts of chassis are different. I think size is dis similiar too. I wont say it has more or equal to western armor because we just dont know (military secrecy). However due to 3 man turrets of modern western tanks need extra armor upto 11 tons to protect extra man. The Type 99 similiarily with other 2 man turret tanks because they do not have to have to protect an extra man.

[..YouTube..] I never state it was a replica. This tank is heavier than all Russian tanks, however is lighter than all American tanks.
Also they have never demonstrated the capability of making Chaobham equivalent armor.
Meaning they are medium weight tanks, with most likely, out of date armor type.

like I said, impossible to say about armor quality. Only seen wikipedia source about its armor, which is not a reliable source. I will say its influenced by western armor techniques because without add on armor, it has a western style turret. Chobam armor is difficult to mould into a curve style thats why western tanks have boxy turrets. You could claim chinese tank has similiar armor properties.like i said i am not claiming i am right.

[..YouTube..] Type 99 is influenced by western armor in the shape, and weight. Influenced heavily by the Type 98.
The main reason why the western tanks are not curved is not due to the difficulty to curve Chobham armor, but rather in that there is no benefit that would have been gained by a round design.A Box shape is much more space effecient than round. The German Leopard 2 for example, while not encorporating Chobham armor, is still as boxed

[..YouTube..] I did not finish comment. Tank programme is not a priority due to airforce and navy needs modernisation. This is because the training and technology gap between its army and a western army is smaller then the gap between their airforce and navy. China has nothing close to F22 but Type 99 is on par with western tanks.

[..YouTube..] Type 99 is pretty much on full scale production, within a few years, already more than 500 has been produced and placed into service. The type 98 were the technology demos.
Type 99 is not on par with western tanks due to its light weight, small main tank round, and possibly lacks the advanced armor from western tanks.

It's lighter because it doesn't use prehistoric DU/Chobam armour from the Seventies and because it is smaller. It only needs room for 3 crew.
It's main tank round is an ATGM which just like the Russian one has a superior range and penetration than any western Sabot or tank launched AT system.
It does have a Chinese designed DU Sabot however, and the 125 gun is also of Chinese design not Russian, it will be made to different tolerance, so we don'r actually have any experience of what kind of penetration this weapon system offers yet.
Given that Soviet tank weaponry (ATGM's) have been the world leader for the best part of 30 years now, I doubt the Chinese have made too much effort developing their Sabot rounds, but you never know.

I love the Steel Beasts clip they show instead of actual footage. I used to play that game all the time, and to randomly see it in that clip was hilarious.
